About PRS for Music, PPL and VPL

PRS for Music (previously the MCPS-PRS Alliance)

PRS for Music licenses through the Performing Right Society Ltd the performing right in copyright music on behalf of its composer and music publishing members. Via the Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society Ltd, it licenses on behalf of those same members, the making of mechanical copies of copyright music (i.e. recording onto a CD, tape, video or DVD etc).

Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL)

PPL licenses the public performance, broadcasting and cable programme rights in sound recordings (i.e. CD's, records, tapes etc) on behalf of their record company members and performers.

Video Performance Ltd (PPL)

VPL is very similar to PPL and license the public use of music videos controlled by their record company members.
